Why you should drink more water if you want to lose weight

Why is water so important to our health?

Did you know that human body is mostly water trapped inside the walls of cells? We drink water for multiple reasons:

  • To maintain the optimum level of hydration in our bodies
  • To flush the toxins out and cleanse the body
  • To cool off
  • To keep the joints working
  • To help the food digestion process

They recommend us to drink at least 2 liters of water per day. Do you know why? Because this is how much water the body uses throughout the day through sweating, urination and other important bodily functions. Without replenishing lost water, the body goes into dehydration and all functions start to suffer, which is why many doctors and dieting experts recommend you abstaining from food, but never from water.

Just like many other bodily functions, your metabolism directly depends on water to work properly. Without enough water, this process of breaking your food down and converting it to energy slows down very much, which means that too few calories are burnt and that too little weight is lost. That is not your goal, is it?
drinking water is good
Not drinking enough water can be compared to “running of fumes” and if you’re dieting and you seem to have hit the plateau, well then you are probably not drinking enough water - that’s a fact. You see, when your metabolism slows down, weight loss slows down even more dramatically, and especially since exercising becomes less effective as the body’s energy levels diminish.

Water also plays an important part in the process of digestion and elimination of residues. Not drinking enough water is your one-way ticket to constipation and a lot of other problems of the intestines. What does poor digestion mean for you? It means that you will not get enough energy from the food that you eat! This will make your body ask for more food and the weight loss process stops right there and, you might assume - the weight gain process begins. A dehydrated body sends out fake hunger signals, therefore tempting you to forget about the diet and eat more food than you should.

Drinking water will make you eat less

Do I need to mention that water is also good filler? Are you ready for one piece of advice? Ok, if you want to eat less food, then drink a TALL glass of water half an hour before every meal. This water will not only fill a large part of your stomach, but your body will feel like your stomach is not empty. This is not some idle speculation we want you to believe in, but a sound advice whose effectiveness can be confirmed by many dietitians and doctors! Nobody can overeat with half of the stomach filled with water and with the body telling him/her: “OK it seems to me that I’m almost full. I don’t need that much food, so cut it short this evening, ok?”

Keep in mind that in order to gain the benefits of drinking enough water, you will want to spread its intake during the day. It means that you shouldn’t drink 2 liters of water all at once! And do you know why? Because your body will simply flush the excess and a lot of it will simply be wasted. Also, you don’t need to restrict yourself only to water. All kinds of fruit juices, teas and coffee count also as liquids that can be used by the body for hydration. Keep in mind that alcohol is out of the question, because alcohol has the exact opposite effect on the body. Ladies, don’t be afraid that drinking a lot of water will make you retain it. It is dehydration, not abundance, which forces the body to hang on to what it has.

Final word of advice

So it’s a good practice to start slowly and aim for at least 1.5 liters of water per day. That would be 5 glasses of 0.3 liters. I suggest you monitor your water intake by writing it down every time you finish drinking one 0.3 liter glass. Just write a dash or something. Then when you have 5 dashes, you’re done for that day. Remember - spread it out during the day, drink water slowly. Do this for a week. Then next week aim for 2 liters a day. This all won’t be easy, especially if you are not drinking enough water anyway.

The whole point of this is to gain a habit of drinking at least 2 liters of water per day. You will feel much better both physically and mentally, and you will lose some weight for sure. Start drinking water now.
